Based on her personal distinct experiences of the stage, and mainly a deep comprehension of the backstage, those large deserted spaces that empty out and sink into silence as soon as the lights go out, Lydia Andrioti breaks down the components of ancient tragedy to direct her own “play” – a comment on Nietzsche:

The Logos : Thespis, the first actor – “light”, converses with the “cyclic chorus” from which he has been detached, in order to act , ie to develop a dialogue and an argument.

The Music: The sounds of nature refer to the two main axes that point to the origin of music: melody and rhythm; the counterpoint between the Apollonian and the Dionysian elements, which, according to Nietzsche, is the prime expression of the tragic feeling of life.

The Space: The ancient theater becomes a mirror, confronting the spectator with himself and introducing him to a process of self-awareness.

The Stage: A massive building, emphatically oriented towards the Acropolis of the Athenian Democracy, as expressed through tragedy, and facing the Sacred Way followed by the Dionysian processions of the Eleusinian Mysteries.

Both the site and the wider area of the city, are a self-referential, bitter commentary on modern expressions of Dionysian entertainment and collective ecstasy, in an attempt to escape from the prison of the Ego. In times where tragedy lost music and music lost tragedy, what do we learn from the Athens of ancient glamor in comparison to the Athens of the crisis? What remains when art, from entertainment, becomes distraction, that is, shedding? The question raised by Andrioti is directly related to the concept she has developed in her previous works (“Entertaining Maintenance”): “acting means light,” but how many are working in the dark for that light to be produced?

Green Mango is the name of the project curated by Future Scenarios for Platforms Project, borrowing the name from a local beauty/hair salon in the area of Kypseli, a multi cultural neighborhood in Athens, Greece. The suggestion behind the “green mango” is to create a pop up store and a meeting spot. Artists show their work, either finished or unfinished, all in different states of being. The objective behind the creation of this “store” is to explore the process of something growing and getting mature, or maybe forever “stay green”. By seeking something growing and getting mature (the material quality of the image and in opposite the image materiality) we adopt a voyeuristic view of artworks connected with current sociopolitical issues.

Future Scenarios is an art project that functions as an experimental collaborative artist platform. Maaike Stutterheim together with artist duo Van ‘t Hullenaar & Vis initiated this project in 2015 with the desire to use Athens as a stage for collaborative artistic work that will function as a cultural exchange between The Netherlands and Greece. Together all the artists involved in this project will use the bridging potency of the visual language to imagine and create a new form of community between these two places. As a portal between East and West, both now and throughout history, Greece lies at the heart of global conflict. Greece is a transit zone where ideas, philosophies & religions have always intersected, resulting in both great prosperity and great wars. It seems that due to the current crisis of humanitarian and economic politics that’s being played out, people in Greece have gotten stuck in an ongoing state of “present”, where the extreme difficulty to imagine a future is leading them towards a growing lack of hope for change. Pointing back at ancient history seems to be all that’s left for them at this moment, while Northern Europe is pointing down at Greece. This makes you wonder what the treasured and polished revived objects of a culture so distant and disconnected from our times and contemporary Greece can possibly tell us about our current condition and how to move forward? Can artefacts somehow allow us the experience of a reversed time travel into the future? Witnessing events far beyond our personal human existence, the associative power of man made objects seems to enable us to escape the intangible constraints of linear time. Artefacts embody a dynamic relationship between past present and future. In their eternal state of here and now they mix up our sense of time, they transport us by activating personal memories and imaginary events. Surviving our limited human lifespan artefacts extend the life of its creator into immortality, securing them a place in future history.

Με αφορμή τις τοπιογραφίες της Αμερικανικής Σχολής του Βερμόντ (χαρακτηριστικα τα έντονα χρώματα, οι καθαρές φόρμες, η προοπτική και η σύνθεση) οι συμμετέχοντες θα επιλέξουν το τοπίο με το οποίο θα ασχοληθούν, ώστε να δημιουργήσουν έργα από τις διαφορετικές υφές και τονικότητες των φύλλων πτώσης από τη χλωρίδα του Πάρκου Σταύρος Νιάρχος.

The exhibition entitled “The fantastic journeys of energy” negotiates and aims to attract, generate and enhance discussions about the various forms of energy in order to explore the ways matter changes through its journeys. Energy is never consumed or lost but due to conditions it is transferred from one form or power into another; similarly to a traveler who is exploring the physical world – it can be conceived as a voyage of these forces.
The working materials of this show are the immutable laws that govern Nature as well as Heisenberg’s Principle of Uncertainty where at the fundamental level Nature is inherently random. Important factors are meanings of space, time, motion and the innertia of a body depending on the different types of energy and its results: the human gesture and its effect on the substances, light, wind, fire, water, fractals, magnetic fields, sound, communication, organic materials and the physicochemical dynamics that govern them. These objectives constitute installations, paintings, drawings, collages, prints, sculptures, ready-mades, video, sound and actions where the participant artists are exploring with poetic attitude the uses and transformations of the different forms of energy.

Σχεδιασμός – Υλοποίηση: Λυδία Ανδριώτη, Κατερίνα Ζαφειροπούλου & Γιάννης Καπέλλος, εικαστικοί

To origami, η τέχνη διπλώματος του χαρτιού, αποτελεί μια αρχαία ασιατική τεχνική, η ονομασία της οποίας προέρχεται από τις λέξεις ori = διπλώνω και kami = χαρτί, πνεύμα.

Στο εργαστήριο αυτό, οι συμμετέχοντες θα εμπλουτίσουν τις γνώσεις τους αναφορικά με την παράδοση της γλυπτικής μεθόδου origami, καθώς θα σχεδιάσουν και θα συναρμολογήσουν γλυπτικά αντικείμενα με μοναδικό υλικό το χαρτί.

Το εργαστήριο θα ολοκληρωθεί με την κατασκευή μιας σειράς έργων, εμπνευσμένων από το ζωικό βασίλειο, ώστε να αποκαλυφθεί η πολυπλοκότητα της διαδικασίας που μετατρέπει τη δισδιάστατη επιφάνεια του χαρτιού σε τρισδιάστατο αντικείμενο.

Future Scenarios is an art project that functions as an experimental collaborative artist platform. Maaike Stutterheim together with artist duo Van ’t Hullenaar & Vis initiated this project in 2015 with the desire to use Athens as a stage for collaborative artistic work that will function as a cultural exchange between The Netherlands and Greece. Together all the artists involved in this project will use the bridging potency of the visual language to imagine and create a new form of community between these two places.

The Artefact Time Machine, a Prologue at Art Athina is the second presentation within the framework of Future Scenarios. The Artefact Time Machine will now go on to be developed collaboratively as a series of happenings/events/exhibitions that will unfold over the course of 2016/17. As a point of departure for this project we will focus on man made objects to investigate how the future can be regarded as equally a product of our past and present, as history can be regarded as a product of our present and future using our human/artistic capabilities of imagination, perception and projection.
